Plataforma "Character Education" ¿Qué es la Educación en Carácter?

La educación en carácter es un movimiento educativo que apoya el desarrollo social, emocional y ético de los estudiantes. Es el esfuerzo proactivo por parte de las escuelas, distritos y estados para ayudar a los estudiantes a desarrollar valores importantes, éticos y de rendimiento, tales como el cuidado, la honestidad, diligencia, justicia, fortaleza, responsabilidad y respeto por uno mismo y con otros. La educación en carácter proporciona soluciones a largo plazo de las cuestiones morales, éticas y académicas que son motivo de preocupación creciente en nuestra sociedad y en nuestras escuelas. La educación del carácter enseña a los estudiantes a dar lo mejor de nosotros mismos y cómo hacer un mejor trabajo, a la vez que facilitar la cultura escolar positiva y la transformación del clima.
Dado que los niños pasan alrededor de novecientas (900) horas al año en la escuela, las escuelas deben ser proactivas para ayudar a desarrollar ambientes de apoyo donde los estudiantes se convierten en hombres y mujeres sanos y trabajadores.
La educación en carácter comienza cuando los miembros de la comunidad escolar se reúnen para determinar los valores fundamentales que comparten. Estos valores se convierten en la base de todo lo que la escuela planifica - plan de estudios, estrategias de enseñanza, la cultura escolar y actividades extracurriculares. La educación en carácter entonces se infunde en la comunidad en general.

VIRTUES-BASED COMMUNITY

Our journey with character development began in 1977. Although it was not commonly emphasized elsewhere, our school recognized the importance of integral development (moral, intellectual, ethical, emotional). From this is born, in 1990, the SOCRATES PROJECT (our first virtues-based initiative). The purpose of this Project was to unify our already established programs such as: Extended hours, Big Brothers and Sisters Initiative, Tutoring, after school sports and activities.
We attended the American Camp Association and discovered “Character Counts!” We were the first school to bring this program to Puerto Rico in 2003. In 2004, we underwent training and the program was adopted and implemented because it fit our philosophy. With the inclusion of Character Counts (CC), we were able to develop a structure upon which to work character development. We formed a Committee of CC, which developed activities, agenda, lesson plans, and workshops, but we felt we could do more, so students could internalize the traits. In 2007-08, we discovered Character Education Partnership (CEP) and attended the 15th Forum of Character Education, becoming familiar with the 11 Principles of Effective Character Education. In 2008, stakeholders (parents, students, non-academic personnel, and staff) received training by CEP, which gave a greater structure and cohesiveness to our character development education. In the summer of 2010, Administrators become facilitators of Virtues Project™. All members of our community received training in the VP.
Character Education at Radians is not a program, anymore; it is a way of life. This, in combination, helped fill the spiritual and emotional aspect of integral development of our Radians virtues-based community. Human beings are composed of spirit and physical body. They are the inherent, latent qualities of human beings. We have all the elements to create and develop those characteristics within our community. Our virtues, the gifts of character, guide the entire decision making process in our school. God bless our community!
